Know the word

What is a peptide?

In a peptide, tiny pieces form a short chain, much like beads on a string. These same pieces can form proteins when joined together. Insulin is a peptide.

The name alone doesn’t answer the care question. Ask which medicine is being offered and why.

Some are medicines

Is this real medical care?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) looks at specific uses when reviewing a medicine.

Ozempic and Wegovy both contain the medicine semaglutide. The FDA’s drug records show that Ozempic is approved to help adults control blood sugar when they have type 2 diabetes. Wegovy is approved for losing weight and keeping it off, alongside eating fewer calories and being more active. Source checked September 26, 2026.

That does not answer whether it fits your goal. Bring that question to the person assessing you.

Know the difference

What does “compounded” mean?

Compounding makes a medicine to fit a patient’s needs, for example by leaving out a dye they cannot tolerate.

The FDA explains that it has not approved compounded medicines. Before a compounded medicine goes on sale, the agency does not check whether it is safe, works well or is made to a good standard. Source checked September 26, 2026.

The FDA says a pharmacy-made medicine may meet a patient’s medical need if an approved medicine cannot do so. Source checked September 26, 2026.

A reason to pause

What about “research use only”?

A “research use only” label suggests a product is for studies, but some sellers offer it for people to take. The FDA’s warning to buyers advises avoiding these weight-loss drugs: their quality is not known, and taking them could cause harm. Source checked September 26, 2026.

Ask what the product is called and whether it is sold as a medicine or only for research.

Where does finding care begin?

Telehealth means getting care through an online exchange, a phone call or video.

The Medical Board’s rules for remote care require a current California licence for a doctor who treats you while you are in the state. Having a licence means the state permits someone to work as a doctor. Source checked September 28, 2026.

An in-person practice and an online service are places to ask about care. Start by asking who will assess you, then check that person’s licence.
